Once upon a time, a hard working husband and father noticed something very special about the upscale bathrooms he would see in his hotel stays while traveling. Having remodeled their kitchen back in 2020, he and his wife decided it was time to bring the rest of the house up to date. Gibsonia Primary Closet Problem: Size Matters
When our clients purchased this home many moons ago, they may have not thought that the super small primary bedroom closet would be an issue, until last year. Being a busy family, they were finding themselves in a closet and storage pickle in their bedroom and bathroom. The only closet the couple had was already jammed packed and about to burst at the seams if another pair of shoes or clothing was stuffed in it. So, they decided it was time to enhance their primary suite and bring much needed order and organization to their lives.
Finding Useful Space for Big Closet Enhancements
When our design and construction team put their eyes on the current layout of this bedroom, we noticed there was a significant amount of empty space that could be used to not only make their new closet substantially bigger, it would triple in size.
Thoughtful Closet Options
When contemplating a remodel and expansion of your primary suite closet in Gibsonia, one of the key considerations is finding and utilizing empty floor space effectively. When we work with homeowners, we begin by assessing the existing layout of their suite and identifying underutilized areas that can be repurposed.

Traveling for work, the husband had many nights staying in upscale hotels and noticed he liked a particular theme… BIG showers. Like so many other homeowners we’ve worked with, they wanted to removed their unused tub and have AKN Interiors build them a bigger walk-in shower. Just like, or better than, the ones he’s seen during his hotel stays.

When we began working these wonderful homeowners, it was important we fully understood their bathroom wish list:

- Build a bigger, better shower with a wall shower head as well as a handheld shower.

- Expand the bathroom to build a his/hers vanity area with two sinks and plenty of storage.

Shower Power
This custom shower has all the bells and whistles. First, let’s ooh and ahh over that subway tile installed vertically, stacked, and along the ceiling as well as the exterior side of the pony walls for a classic, modern feel. Notice the quartz counter material along the walls? Perfection.
Next, not only does this couple have a black wall shower head, but they have a handheld for easy shower clean up, bathing pets, or those hard to reach areas. They also can enjoy body sprays that are adjustable so they each can have the ultimate showering experience hitting their specific target areas.
Personal Shower Touches
Sometimes, you just need a little more comfort in your shower. A shower bench is perfect for shaving and resting. The three shampoo niches aren’t just beautiful, they are fully functional for those shower gels, washing poofs, and even a candle.
Frameless shower panels and doors are extremely popular and easier to clean then their framed predecessor and the black hardware is the icing on the cake in this shower remodel.
His and Hers Bathroom Vanity: A Win, Win
The second most important item on the primary bathroom remodel wish list was to expand the space so the couple can have their own sink and storage. Our team removed a small closet and built this beautiful custom double vanity with more storage than they ever dreamed of.
The gray shaker cabinetry gives this bathroom a classic, modern vibe, while the black faucets, arched vanity mirrors, and sconce lighting ties the design to the beautiful black porcelain flooring. You can never go wrong with a herringbone tile pattern.
But let’s talk more about that cabinet storage. Not only does this his/hers bathroom vanity have their own sinks, but they also have their own set of drawers, doors, and a countertop cabinet for all the smell goods, lotions, and make-up items so the quartz counters stay clutter free.
But Wait, There’s More
Just pass the large walk-in shower lives this adorable dressing nook. Ever wished you had a place to hang that special outfit after taking your shower? Yep, they did. And we aim to please with our custom carpentry. This fully custom nook is set up with a quartz top bench, hooks for hats, towels, that new outfit, and a shelf for decorations. The perfect addition to this gorgeous bathroom remodel.
Dirty Clothes and the Commode Have their Place
I don’t know about you, but these homeowners like their privacy when nature calls. The perfect way to accomplish this is by giving the commode it’s own room. Adding a pocket door keeps this space free from a swinging door blocking the flow. No pun.
Another neat custom feature is the linen cabinet that can hold plenty of towels, wash cloths, and extra toiletries. Our favorite thing about the cabinet is the lower laundry pull out keeping those nagging laundry baskets from view.
Because the Guest Bathroom Needs Love too
Now wait a minute. You can’t have a remodeled kitchen, primary bathroom, bedroom, and forget the guest bathroom right? That’s exactly what these fun homeowners thought too. Being their kids were getting older, it was time to give their bathroom a makeover as well.
Tub Shower: A Beautiful Modern Combination
We stayed with the same style of tile for the tile surround but added brass fixtures in this shower. You can’t go wrong with a wall shower head and a handheld shower. Remember, it’s so much easier to clean the tub and walls with the handheld as well as bath pets if you need to.
Instead of the traditional towel accessories, we opted for a shelf with wall hooks giving this bathroom a little more style. And let’s not over look the star of this view, that pattern floor tile. When you want a fun and unique bathroom design, patterned tile is the way to go.
